Exhibition at Cow Artworks: 3 The Cobbles, 4th Avenue Parkhurst, Johannesburg 26 October to 1 November 2008.
Photography and animation by Rob Mills: wrought from liminal spaces beyond the jurisdiction of sensibility and reason. A lightly re-touched de-construction punctuated by the jewellery of Angela Yeung; contemporary pieces of mainly wearable sculptures in silver and pearls. The work includes the first explorations of jewellery components worked into photographs and a brand new animation – another collaboration between Rob Mills and dancer, choreographer Mari-Louise Basson (Mzanzi Productions).
This body of work explores the madness of sensibility. Its about arriving only to find you missed the plot you thought you were in and another has taken over. You're wearing the wrong clothes with no certificate of competence.
This is where concrete reality lifts her skirts to reveal the props and wires that make things go on an off and the empty spaces that should be filled with certainty. Its incongruous, liminal, simultaneously silly and deadly serious with little whisps of transcendence.
